Hiking and Mountaineering

Serbia's staggering mountain peaks and mysterious forests present a real challenge for alpinists, climbers or anyone who wishes to get a bit of fresh mountain air.  For anyone who wants to get away, for at least a few days, from the wild pace of everyday life, Serbia's mountains are an ideal place for getting to know the quiet, provincial way of living, for making friendships, and for reviving one's energy.

Rafting

Thanks to the closeness of Serbian border to Tara Canyon we have the ability to provide you rafting in the Tara Canyon, which is the deepest canyon in Europe. The adventure starts on a very peaceful part of untouched nature in the national park and then speeds up with more rapids downstream. The rafting continues on the Drina until it is reaches the accumulation lake. Along the way we travel through Montenegro and Bosnia and Hercegovina. Another possible route is from Perucica to Bajina Basta.

The happy descent down the Ibar River is an event that takes place every July and attracts more than 2000 visitors. It is a special experience because the rafts are handmade from various materials such as wood or old trees.

LOCATIONS:

Serbia’s Wild Side – Mount Tara

Tara National Park is one of only a few wild places in Serbia that remain untouched by mass tourism. The richness and variety of tourist attractions, preserved natural environment, mountain relief with heights between 800-1500 m, winter sports facilities, richness and variety of plant and animal life, pleasant climate, as well as the river Drina and artificial lakes Perućac and Zaovine make this mountain one of the most beautiful in our country. Tara is situated near the towns of Uzice and Mokra Gora.  The town of Višegrad, with its numerous cultural and historical sights, can be visited easily. This gives the opportunity for more interesting vacations. Tara gives excellent opportunities for the development of sustainable tourism with minimal impact on its environment and cultural heritage, which helps the economic development of the local community at the same time.

Due to its climate and isolation Tara has preserved several ancient species of trees such as Pancic spruce and other almost fossil species of plants. Tara is mostly made of limestone and its average height is 1000-1200m. The highest point is Kozji Rid -1591m and the lowest is 291m at lake Perućac. Vrelo River is the strongest fountain in the national park, which runs into river Drina after 365 meters. Summers are fresh and winters are cold with lots of snow. Most rainfall is in May.  The driest months are July and August. Autumn is sunny and warmer then spring.

National Park Tara is 80% covered with forests. There are 34 forest and 19 meadow communities. 75% of forests are mixed spruce-fir, fir and beech. Besides Pančić spruce, other significant plants are hazel, yew, holly, jeremičak, knapweed of derventa, peony, and blechnum spicant

There are 53 species of mammals in the park. The most interesting are bear (Ursus arctos), and chamois (Rupicapra rupicapra), which live even on elevation of 291m. There are 135 species of birds, 43 of them being migrating species. The most interesting are the endangered species such as the golden eagle (Aquila chryssetos), peregrine falcon and others.

Zlatibor

Zlatibor is a mountain region situated in the western part of Serbia, a part of the Dinaric Alps. Name ZLATIBOR (ZLATI=golden, BOR=pine) means "Golden Pine". On Zlatibor you can see many pine trees and that is why people called this beautiful Serbian mountain "Golden Pine Mountain".
The mountain spreads over an area of 300 km², lies 27 miles in length from southeast to northwest, and is up to 23 miles in width. The three highest peaks of Zlatibor massif are: Tornik (1.496m) - the highest peak of Zlatibor, Brijach (1.480m) and Chigota (1.422m).

The central Zlatibor plateau is about 1000 m high in average, and there are a few easily spacious sloping grounds, rich pasture-grounds and mountain brooks. There are about 1000 square km of meadows and risings, sloping grounds and dry grounds, as well as abysses and chasms.

Uvac Canyon

"Uvac" Special Nature Reserve is protected natural asset of great importance. It is situated in southwestern Serbia in the region of Stari Vlah-Raška high plateau, wedged between Mt.Zlatar in the southwest and Mt. Javor in the northeast. "Uvac" Special Nature Reserve occupies an area of 5525 km. Minimum altitude in the reserve is 760m above sea level, and the maximum is 1322 m.
A major feature of the reserve is the Uvac River canyon. The special value of the canyon is the curving meanders of the river.

"Uvac" Special Nature Reserve is distinguished by the presence of 104 bird species. Most important of all is the griffon vulture, one of  two vulture species that are still nesting in Serbia. Griffon vultures are, at the same time, the greatest attraction in the reserve. The Griffon vulture is of an impressive size with a wingspan of up to 3m, which makes him a powerful flier. Its flight has been studied by scientists, and aeronautic engineers have used the knowledge on the construction of aircraft. The role it plays in the food chain is unique and makes him irreplaceable. It is adapted to a diet of dead animals and therefore stops the spread of diseases and contributes to a kind of "natural recycling".  "Uvac" Special Nature Reserve is also home to the largest population of rare bird species in the Balkans.
